ADHD Life Admin: A System for Tasks You Keep Avoiding
Use an ADHD life-admin system for forms, appointments, bills, returns, emails, and calls by capturing loose ends and exposing one concrete next action.
Life admin becomes manageable when every loose end is captured, each entry names a concrete next action, documents are placed where that action happens, and one short admin session has a visible finish.
Life admin contains small tasks with disproportionate friction: call the dentist, return a parcel, submit a form, cancel a subscription, answer an email. None is a major project. Together they create a constant sense that something has been forgotten.
Capture actions, not categories
"Dentist" is not a task. Write "find dentist phone number" or "call dentist about appointment." "Tax" may begin with "download bank statement."
Use Sprout's Brain Dump when the loose ends arrive as a stream. AI Task Breakdown can suggest steps for forms, bookings, and unfamiliar processes. Check suggestions against the actual instructions.
Keep physical and digital items connected
If a task requires a letter, photograph or scan it and note where the original lives. Put returns beside the exit and add the actual deadline. Save the link needed for an online form inside the task.
Physical piles often represent unrecorded actions. Tidywell's ADHD doom-pile guide explains how to separate the object from the decision.
Run a bounded admin session
Choose three actions
Pick one urgent item and two quick or emotionally lighter items.
Prepare the materials
Open links, documents, numbers, and account details before starting.
Do one task at a time
Avoid opening every form and email at once.
Record the waiting state
If another person must respond, note what you are waiting for and when to follow up.
Track waiting, not just doing
Many admin tasks leave your control after an email or form is sent. Create a follow-up task with a date rather than keeping the obligation in memory. Mark the current action complete.
Use help where appropriate
A partner or trusted person can sit with you, help interpret a letter, or share a Patch. For legal, financial, benefits, or medical decisions, use qualified advice rather than relying on an app or general article.
